Irregular breathing may cause spasms, which in turn cause hiccups. To remedy the situation, you can stick out your tongue when no one is watching. This exercise allows for smooth breathing, which in turn quells the otherwise disturbing hiccups.
Taking quick sips of water
When experiencing hiccups, you can take a glass of water in quick successions. This exercise causes rhythmic contraction of the esophagus, which in turn smoothes out the breathing eliminating the spasms which in turn lead to the relaxation of the diaphragm. By the time this happens, the hiccups would have disappeared.
