Narendra Modi To Take Oath of Allegiance for Premiership In India

Narendra Modi, India’s next prime minister designate is to take an oath of allegiance to the premiership on 26th May 2014. The premier designate disclosed this last Tuesday when President Pranab Mukherjee appointed him to form the next cabinet. After his swearing in, Narendra Modi would oversee who would sit in the next cabinet.

The 63 year old Narendra Modi, was appointed to the Premiership on Tuesday after meeting the president elect. History will record Narendra Modi as the 14th prime minister of India after the swearing in ceremony on 26th May 2014 at 6 pm. The ceremony will take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on that Monday.

Rajnath Singh confirms the swearing in ceremony

A couple of hours before the head of state made the official appointment of Narendra Modi to the premiership, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh had met the head of state. It was obvious that Narendra Modi would be appointed the next prime minister of India since Rajnath Singh had previously appointed Modi as the parliamentary party leader. The saffron outfit and other leaders of the National Democratic Alliance, (NDA) had accompanied Janata for the visit to the head of state.

Invitees to the scheduled swearing in ceremony

To deliver unexpected diplomatic move, Pakistan’s Premier Nawaz Sharif has received invitation to attend the scheduled swearing in ceremony of Narendra Modi. Other guests on the invitation list include leaders of nations in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, SAARC. The BJP President, Rajnath Singh has confirmed that other 3000 dignitaries will grace the occasion, which will mark another great milestone for the party.

It will be interesting to see what diplomatic effects the invitation of Pakistan’s Nawaz will yield considering the strained relationship between India and Pakistan.

While delivering his acceptance speech at the central hall of Parliament, Modi was overcome by emotions while making reference to his former mentor, L. K. Advani. Advani is a veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP.  In his speech, Modi promised to dedicate his efforts to the service the party and India. Furthermore, he expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity the party had offered him to serve his country, India.

It should be noted that BJP had secured majority acceptance from the people through a landslide win delivered to them in the recently concluded general election. Modi confirmed that when the people voted for him, they voted for great hope. He represents that hope both for the BJP and the nation at large. It will be interesting to see if he will deliver on that hope during his tenure.

BJP’s Leadership mantle in the Premiership

As exciting as it is, the scheduled swearing in of Modi, India’s prime minister designate will mark another great milestone for BJP. It should be noted that Modi will be the second prime minister that BJP has produced. The party has previously produced Atal Bihari Vajpayee as their first prime minister in the party’s leadership mantle. It will be interesting to see if Modi will follow the footsteps of Vajpayee.
